Strength is the ability to contract your muscles with maximum force. However, this force can be applied in many different ways depending on your objective and how efficiently you use your body.
First, there is both general and golf specific strength. General strength refers to the strength of the whole muscular system. However, it just refers to building strength in a very general sense. Most people think of it as the foundation or segway for further progression. When you begin using this strength in a way and with exercises that help specifically benefit the movement patterns of golf, then it becomes ‘golf specific’.
Starting strength is your ability to’ turn on’ as many muscle fibers as possible simultaneously. Try imagining a pitcher on the mound ready to deliver a fast ball or a boxer with a quick knockout punch.
How about speed strength? Imagine combing the attributes of starting strength and explosive power. This kind of strength applies to how well you can apply force with maximum speed.
Muscular strength and endurance refers to a muscles ability to perform work over a prolonged period of time. How about 4 to 5 hours with a round of golf and requiring the same output from your muscles over this same time period?
So, which are the most important for golf and how best do you develop this?
