4 Things You MUST Understand if You Really Want To Get Serious About Lowering Your Handicap...
1. Today's sedentary lifestyles create anatomical limitations that prevent golfers from easily achieving the fluid, rounded swing that they want. And to make matters worse, doing exercises that exacerbate these anatomical dysfunctions is worse than doing nothing at all. Many golfers know things about themselves like their quads are more developed than their hamstrings or that their shoulders are rounded forward. And yet, they keep on doing the exercises they've been doing and making the situation worse! Being in an exercise rut is not good and is one of the reasons why we took this modular approach to golf fitness. Mixing and matching golf workouts will keep you out of a rut and more importantly, help you develop a balanced golf body.
2. Injury prevention should be a priority. Let's face it, you can't lower your handicap while you are out of the game. Golf is one of the most demanding sports there is due to the high level of torque placed on the body during the rotation of the swing. And if you are playing with pain, you know first hand that your body will perform all sorts of swing compensations in order to protect from incurring more pain. Many of these compensations will then lead to additional injury. If you are experiencing pain, look in the injury rehab area for programs to help.
3. Boring repetitive cardio exercise routines are NOT the best way to prepare you for a better round of golf. How many of you consider yourself as having a fitness regime because you get on the treadmill for three 45 minute sessions a week? The cardio certainly won't hurt your endurance (if you stay injury free while performing the repetitive cardio) but it also won't help you towards strength endurance or speed strength that is so important to a quality round of golf.
4. Even though all exercise is good, do even better by doing what is good for you as a golfer. If you aren't doing golf specific fitness routines, you might be targeting the wrong muscles and setting yourself up for less range of motion, weaker golf muscles and possible injury. The golf swing uses many muscles and they work together as one big kinetic chain. Activating, building, and stretching these muscles in the proper sequence are key components of a great golf fitness workout.

So how do you get started building your own customized Golf Specific Fitness Program?
- All of our programs are meant to be mixed and matched. Start with one and add on from there. Every one of the programs is a balanced program - in other words, if it works a particular muscle, it will also work the opposing muscle so as to keep that muscle group balanced. We offer discounts for multi-program purchases on any one order.
- If you know or have been told you have a particular swing fault, the Workout By Swing Fault section is the place to start. If you don't see a particular swing fault, let us know - we'd be happy to design one for you.
- If you fall into a particular demographic, such as senior or junior, the workouts under Workouts By Type will target your specific needs. Or if you are working towards a particular goal such as power or stability, you will find ones targeted to those goals as well.
- Many of the programs utilize common pieces of workout equipment such as resistance bands and weighted balls, but if you want to target your workout to a location such as a gym or a place where you have no access to any equipment whatsoever, look in the Workout By Equipment section for workouts targeted to match your equipment.
- Hopefully, you are currently playing pain free, but if you are not, the workouts in the Injury Rehab Section will help you get out on the course once again. Remember to follow a medical professional's advice and that resting is not the suggested course of action for a muscle injury.
- If you would like a total body workout based over the course of a 4 week, 8 week or 12 week period, then the Complete Programs Section is for you. This area takes some commitment and often is what scares people off from getting started. If you are ready to make the commitment, then proceed onwards but if you feel a little overwhelmed, start with a program that targets a specific problem or goal. Starting with the Home Stretch Program is also a great place to begin. You will feel better about meeting goals and once you see the results, it will be easier to commit to a complete program.
